Earth Hour is a worldwide event which aims at raising awareness about the need to take action on climate change by turning off non-essential lights for one hour. The Town of Kirkland wants to join the ranks in the fight against global warming. On Saturday, March 25, at 8:30 p.m., Kirkland will turn off all non-essential lighting of its municipal buildings for one hour. All residents, merchants and businesses in Kirkland are encouraged to join the Town’s initiative for Earth Hour.
Initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the event first took place in 2007 in Sidney, Australia. Following Sydney’s lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event. Earth Hour has now grown to be the largest environmental movement in history!
Earth Hour is more than switching off lights for one hour, once a year. It’s about giving people a voice for the future of our planet, and sending a message to our world leaders that we want action on climate change. Climate change is the most urgent environmental issue facing our planet and every one of us has a role to play to help stop it.
