Residual waste management

Residual Waste Management

We should cut back on residual waste!

The Town of Kirkland is a forerunner when it comes to sustainable development initiatives and continues to work hard to reduce the quantity of garbage that goes to the landfills.

To that end, the Town has provided for its residents numerous residual waste collections in order to promote the 4 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover). Through fostering healthy residual waste management, Kirkland hopes to raise citizen awareness so that ultimately, we can all live in a waste-free society.

Do you know the 4 Rs?

Four easy ways to reduce waste: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover residual material. Applying the 4 R principle has a real impact on reducing and saving our natural resources.

Reduction at the source

Reducing at the source means producing less residual material and managing it responsibly. It also means reducing the use of raw materials.

Helpful tips:

  • Get your bills online.
  • Bring your reusable bags when you go shopping.
  • Read your favorite newspaper electronically.
  • Buy reusable containers, rechargeable batteries, fabric napkins …
  • Instead of buying a product you hardly use, rent it.
  • Save paper by printing on both sides and using email more often.
  • Print on recycled paper.
  • Buy in bulk.

Reuse

The second R involves reusing goods, products or recovered materials without significantly altering them. It is giving a new life to our residual waste.

Helpful tips:

  • Organize a garage sale for selling your items instead of throwing them out.
  • Reuse your containers, grocery bags, gift bags.
  • Use reusable cups and containers at work or at school.
  • Donate your old clothes to a used clothing and furniture counter.
  • Repair your goods instead of discarding them.
  • Donate your old computer to a community organization or a school.
  • Ask for paper grocery bags then use them to cover books.

Recycle

The third R is the best known of all! Recycling is a waste treatment process that allows used materials to be reintroduced in the production of a new product.

Helpful tips:

  • Take part in the town’s recycling program by depositing all your paper, glass, metal and plastic into your wheeled bin.
  • Make sure to have a recycling container on each floor.

Recover

Recovering is taking items that cannot be reused or recycled and transforming them into energy and/or raw material. Composting and energy reclamation are good examples of that.

Helpful tips:

  • Compost your green and household waste either through the Town’s organic waste collection or using a backyard composter (or both!)
  • After mowing your lawn, leave the grass clippings on the soil for grasscycling.
