Garage sales

If you are planning to hold a garage sale, don’t forget to get a permit first, from Town Hall during business hours, at a cost of $15. In accordance with our current by-law, garage sales are permitted once a year per household, except for the Community Garage Sale which is usually held in May and in September, and for which a permit is not required.

We are taking this opportunity to remind you that if you put up signs and posters to advertise your garage sale, you must make sure to take them down the day following the event. If you do not do so, we will do it for you and you will be subject to a fine.

For more information on this, please contact the Urban Planning Department at 514 694-4100.

A friendly reminder for garage sale vendors and buyers*

It is important to use caution when buying or selling items at garage sales, particularly if they are intended for use by children.

What sellers and buyers should do:

  • Stay informed about product recalls, advisories and important regulatory changes.
  • Carefully inspect all products to ensure they are not damaged, cracked, have missing parts or are missing the instructions.
  • If you have a prohibited product, such as a baby walker, Health Canada advises you to destroy the item so no one else will be able use it.
